Notes:
Generalized Nets (GNs) are extensions of Petri nets and their modifications. In the present book GNs are constructed for modelling, diagnostics and logistics in medicine. The first chapter introduces the concept of GNs: it defines them and describes their nature and scope in terms of algebra and logic. The second chapter constructs a GN-model of diabetes mellitus after first describing a conventional mathematical model. This is done so that the distinctive features of the GN-model stand out by means of the contrast. A similar approach is used in the fourth chapter where a GN-model of hospital processes is constructed. The remainder of the book (second part of the second chapter and the third chapter) consists of GN-models constructed for the diagnostics of nephrological and other diseases. Authors are specialists in GNs working in the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia (A. Shannon), 2nd City Hospital, Sofia, Bulgaria (J. Sorsich) and Centre for Biomedical Modelling of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria (K. Atanassov). Dr. K. Atanassov is a Honorary Associate of the University of Technology of Sydney, Australia.
