Notes:
This book is a translation of a number of articles by the author dealing with the characteristics, customs and life of the Turkish people and published under the title Turks and Their Wives, the Sultan and His Harem in St. Petersburg in 1874 by A.F.Bazounov. It describes the attitude of the Turkish woman towards her husband, curious pictures of polygamy, of ceremonies before and during the wedding, and after the marriage. Thus the author explains the sources of Turkish conservatism and the reasons for the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Sensational is the fact that this translation was begun as early as 1874 by Hristo Botev. The book will be of interest to ethnographers, folklorists, historians, sociologists, orientalists, students and the large audience.
