Notes:
The book is the first academic study to shed light on the history and theory of the hagiographic reform which was initiated by St. Simeon Logothetes and Theophrastes around the end of the 10th century. The author attempts to provide insights into Metaphrastes creative world by analysing some of his texts as well as by dwelling on writings about him by authors such as Michael Psellus and Agapyos Landos. the issues the book touches on include the aesthetic impact of hagiographic literature, the role of the Bible as that literature`s metatext, and the Old Bulgarian translations of Simeon`s prayers, sermons and saints` lives. Special attention is paid to the history of Slavonic metaphrastics from its first steps to the writings of St. Demetrius of Rostov. The book could be of interest to theolologians and specialists in medieval literature and Eastern Orthodox church culture.
