Such a Dictionary appears in Russia for the first time. It contains 66,000 words and includes the names of all administrative units which in Japan are classified into five ranks: prefectures ("ken"), cities ("shi"), districts ("gun") etc. Also included are railway station of the national and some private railways, goods traffic terminals, tunnels, dams, mines, pits, minerals springs, etc., together with the names of all principal features of the country`s landscape. Apart from these, the dictionary contains the names of provinces ("kuni") in accordance with the old administrative division, both full and abbreviated, and the districts ("ku") of large Japanes cities. This dictionary differs a great deal from the 1959 Dictionary of Japanese Geographical Names. It contains many more entries and registers all changes in names and the emergence of new administrative units, structures and other geographical objects. As well as containing the hieroglyphic spelling of the names and their Russian transcription, which is consistent with the Guide for Transcribing Japanese Geographical Names issued by the Main Geodetic and Cartographic Department at the USSR Council of Ministers. The Dictionary is intended for a wide range of users: teachers and students from colleges and departments for Oriental studies, individual learns, translators, librarians, staff members of translations offices, ets. The traditional hiragana transcription will make it useful for students of Japanese in other countries.
