In this second volume of the series Zoologia Neocaledonica, 28 authors from eight countries joined their efforts to advance the study of one of the most diversified but most threatened faunas of the world. As many as 95 new species, seven new genera and a new subgenus are described, revisions of numerous species belonging in Turbellaria, Arachnida, Collembola, Insecta and Reptilia are presented, and the extraordinarily high-level endemism of the fauna of New Caledonia and the complex biogeographical affinities are again highlighted. Jean Chazeau, In-charge-of-Research at the ORSTOM, serves at Noumea since 1977; he is the initiator of the programme "Faunistic characteristics of the non-anthropogenic forests and maquis" carried out by this organization in New Caledonia. Simon Tillier, Deputy Director at the National Museum of Natural History, served at the ORSTOM Centre at Noumea in 1986-1987; he coordinates since 1985 the Museum`s Specific action programme "Evolution and vicariance in New Caledonia".
