Notes:
Ants and plants are sometimes associated in the tropics, and actually help each other. The myrmecophilic function, and - to a lesser extent - the acarophilic function, is an association with mutual benefits, a true symbiosis. Separate evolutions of a tree and an ant are a very long and complex process, but a coevolution of a tree with an ant seems extremely difficult to conceive. Very few books have been written on this topic in the past decade, and this book is an up-to-date version, thoroughly revised and enlarged, of a pioneer book published (in French) by the same author in 1986. The literature on ant-plant interactions is dispersed over the USA, Australia, UK, Germany and France, which makes it difficult to have the various data at hand. This book summarizes what is known on the subject and concludes with an extensive and quasi-complete bibliography, a glossary, a taxonomic index of ants, plants and other insects mentioned, and 32 colour plates which enhance the text. The author, an authority on ant-plant interactions, has travelled extensively all his life in the Old and New World tropics, and has been able to study on the spot most of the ant-plants descri bed here, including the newly discovered Panamanian myrmecophy tes.
