The Memories of the Natural history museum publish the fifth volume of the series Zoologia Neocaledonica, devoted to the study of the fauna of New Caledonia, one of the "significant points" of the biodiversity in the southern hemisphere. This territory, of origin gondwanienne, was the theatre of extraordinary geological events since the Cretaceous: immersions, nappage ultramafic, and intermittent communication with Australia and New Zealand. The richness, the originality and the endemism of fauna néo-calédonienne are exceptional and testify to this attractive regional history, with a number of relictes groups or single ecological specializations. This biodiversity is analyzed in this volume which takes stock of the knowledge obtained on various groups of insects, acarina and reptiles. Twelve contributions gather descriptions of 103 new species and 3 new kinds and present many new biological information. Beyond the census of the regional richness, these studies pose the problem of the origin and the safeguarding of this biodiversity. Judith NAJT, Director of Research CNRS to the national Natural history museum of natural History, is a specialist in the collemboles; she coordinated the program pluriformations of the Natural history museum "terrestrial Biodiversité in New Caledonia" of 1992 to 2002.
