Notes:
Based on extensive lab experiments of maintaining mixed populations of the Norway and black rats, as well as numerous field observations, these two species tend to compete in synanthropic habitats. The Norway rat appears to be more successful and competitive, being capable even of ousting the black rat when spreading. However, the situation is far from straightforward for sometimes, depending on local, especially synanthropic particulars, both species develop a communal social structure. Richly documented and illustrated with numerous graphs. A rich bibliography.
