Alien terrestrial arthropods of Europe

This book provides the first comprehensive review of the fauna of alien terrestrial arthropods that have colonized the European continent and its associated islands. Directly ensuing from the DAISIE project, this is the result of the joint work of 89 authors from 27 different European countries. The book summarizes present knowledge of the arthropod invasion process, from temporal trends and biogeographic patterns, to pathways and vectors, invaded habitats, and ecological and economical impacts. A total of 1590 species alien to Europe, including crustaceans, myriapods, mites, spiders, and insects, are listed in two volumes and 21 separate chapters that detail the different taxonomic groups. For each species, all key information - feeding regime, date and country of first record in Europe, invaded countries, invaded habitats, plant or animal host - is supplied. More detailed factsheets are provided for the 80 species considered to be most representative of the different pathways of introduction and of the diversity of impacts on ecosystems, economic activities and human and animal health.

Overwintering and Cold-Hardiness of Ants in the Northeast of Asia

This monograph attempts to determine how land insects (several abundant species of ants taken as an example) adapt to winter survival in northeastern Russia, the region with the lowest winter temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. Data on the geographical, landscape and habitat distribution of species, the abundance of nests and families, location and organization of nests and population structure are given. Winter thermal regimes under conditions of extreme continental climate in differently positioned nests are described in detail. The influence of permafrost on the vital functions and wintering conditions of ants is examined. Characteristics of the cold-hardiness of larvae and adults (supercooling points and long-term tolerable temperature), seasonal changes in these parameters and concentrations of substances enabling cold-hardiness are given. The summarizing part of the book contains analysis of the relations between spatial distribution and cold-hardiness in ants in general, as well as of the adaptive strategies of these insects, which are intolerant of tissue freezing, that enable them to exist under extremely harsh climatic conditions. The book is addressed not only to entomologists working in biological and agricultural research institutes, but also to all ecologists interested in the strategies of animal adaptations to extreme conditions and cold in particular. The book will also be of use to students of biology and of local lore.

Current Advances in Scarabaeoidea Research

The Scarabaeoidea is one of the largest superfamilies in the Coleoptera and includes approximately 2,200 genera and about 32,000 species worldwide. Scarabs have diversified into most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and carnivores. Some scarabs exhibit various levels of parental care and sociality. Some are myrmecophilous or termitophilous. Many possess extravagant horns, others are able to roll into a compact ball, and still others are highly armored for inquiline life. Some are important agricultural pests that may destroy crops, while others are used in the biological control of dung and dung flies. Scarabaeoids are popular beetles due to their large size, bright colors, and interesting natural histories. Because of the popularity of the group, there exists an erroneous impression that the superfamily is taxonomically well known. However, even with a lengthy history of study, the group is in real need of continuing research. The papers in this volume cover a wide array of research topics on Scarabaeoidea, including evolutionary relationships, character trait evolution, species concepts, descriptions of new taxa, keys for identification, nomenclature, historical biogeography, methods, and basic life history information. These papers are a valuable contribution to our knowledge of scarabaeoids, and they will provide a foundation for future research.

Cercidiphyllum and Fossil Allies: Morphological Interpretation and General Problems of Plant Evolution and Development

Cercidiphyllum is a relict angiosperm bringing to us a flavor of Cretaceous Period. Its reproductive morphology was interpreted, in the spirit of the dominant evolutionary paradigm, as inflorescences of reduced flowers represented by solitary pistils and groups of stamens. Evolutionary significance of Cercidiphyllum has long been anticipated despite the unpersuasive morphological interpretation and irrelevant paleobotanical evidence.
This work was initially intended for paleobotanists who willingly compare their fossil material with the living Cercidiphyllum, using schematic descriptions and illustrations of traditional plant morphology. The idea behind this book was to provide an adequately illustrated material for such comparisons. Yet it turned out that there are more things in Cercidiphyllum than are dreamed of in our traditional plant morphology.
Some of morphological findings of this study, such as the replacement of the floral structure by leafy shoots or the subtending bract–leaf conversion are relevant to the experimental “evo-devo” studies and bear on general problems of angiosperm evolution. In Cercidiphyllum, the vegetative body is partly or mostly produced in the reproductive line, suggesting a neotenic ancestral form, in which the vegetative development was drastically reduced relative to reproductive domain. Later in evolutionary history, the vegetative body was rebuilt in the lineage on the way to arboreal forms, with foliation of the floral receptacles and the carpel–leaf convergence as side effects of the process. Neoteny, or precocious fertility, might have required developmental machinery with ambivalent regulatory gene expressions in the foliar and floral primordia, invoking two opposite evolutionary tendencies: (1) reduction and elimination of sterile organs from the apical zone and (2) secondary foliation of floral structures. The ambiguous floral morphology of Cercidiphyllum is here interpreted as a long-standing balance of these conflicting tendencies.
With regard to this model, the fossil record of Cercidiphyllum-like plants appears meaningful, although still incomplete. The weedy Early Cretaceous ranunculids, including forms with a few basal leaves, represent the neotenic stage, also recognizable in the evolution of their contemporaneous anthognetophytes. Transitional floral morphologies link such forms to the later appearing cercidiphyllids, platanoids and trochodendrocarpoids, the vegetative features of which were formed at the next, amplification stage, represented by the Eocercidiphyllites plant from the mid- Cretaceous of the Negev, and were conserved through the later evolutionary developments.

Atlas of Biodiversity Risk

The present Atlas of Biodiversity Risk is the first of its kind to describe and summarise in a comprehensive, easy-to-read and richly illustrated form the major pressures, impacts and risks of biodiversity loss at a global level. The main risks identified are caused by global climate and land use change, environmental pollution, loss of pollinators and biological invasions. The impacts and consequences of biodiversity loss are analyzed with a strong focus on socio-economic drivers and their effects on society. Three scenarios of potential futures are the baseline for predicting impacts and explore options for mitigating adverse effects at several spatio-temporal scales. Elements of these futures are modeled, tested and illustrated. The Atlas is divided into chapters which mostly deal with particular pressures. It furthermore is based on case studies from a large set of countries, which are completed by introductory and concluding texts for each chapter. The Atlas combines the main outcomes of the large European project ALARM (performed by 68 partner organisations from 35 countries from Europe as well as other continents) with some core outputs of numerous further research networks. A total number of 366 authors from more than 180 institutions in 43 countries provided information and contributed to the Atlas.

The Atlas is addressed to a wide spectrum of users. Scientists will find summaries of well-described methods, approaches and case studies. Conservationists and policy makers will use the conclusions and recommendations based on academic research output and presented in a comprehensive and easy-to-read way. Lecturers and teachers will find good examples to illustrate the main challenges in our century of global environmental changes. The Atlas is an indispensible tool to any library or institution in biodiversity and environmental sciences. Finally, all people concerned with environmental issues will find the Atlas a powerful weapon in their fight for saving the life on our Planet!

The Snails of the Land of Israel

Why is it that the Land of Israel has such a great diversity of snails? How do terrestrial gastropods of Israel cope with problems of desiccation, of high temperatures, of predators and of finding mates? How do these aspects determine their distribution? With which colour-patterns are their shells decorated? Who really are the terrestrial gastropods of Israel? Which are the snails and bivalves in its fresh waters? Answers to these and other questions are the topics of this book. The book is divided into two parts. The first concerns the natural history of Israel's terrestrial gastropods. Beyond basic knowledge without which one cannot proceed, the book focuses on the land snails of Israel. The second part is devoted to a detailed and fully illustrated description of each species, accompanied by its distribution map. The book is addressed to specialists in snails, ecologists, biogeographers, conservationists, travellers and anyone interested in the nature of the Near East.

Evolutionary Biology and Conservation of Dung Beetles

The Book. For a relatively small group of insects, dung beetles have attracted an inordinate amount of scientific interest over the years. This started with the work of the famous French naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre about 100 years ago, but it the work of Gonzalo Halffter of Mexico, and his colleagues, who first placed dung beetles on the scientific map by the publication of two important synthetic works. The first was published in 1966 (natural history) and this was followed by another in 1982 (nesting and breeding behaviour). A multi-authored book on dung beetle ecology, edited by Ilkka Hanski and Yves Cambefort, was published in 1991.These volumes are long out of print and mostly unavailable. In the 18 years since the last book was published there has been a steady stream of research published on dung beetle phylogeny, biogeography, physiological ecology and conservation, fields that were not, or barely treated in the previous books. The current work synthesises and updates most of the major elements covered in those studies, but introduces several novel sections in a phylogenetic approach to the natural history of dung beetles. The aspects covered, in five sections, are the following: (A) Evolution and ecological success of dung beetles; (B) Physiological and behavioural ecology of dung beetles; (C) Phylogeny of the Scarabaeinae; (D) Historical biogeography of the Scarabaeinae and its physical and biotic drivers; (E) Conservation of dung beetles. The content of the book is balanced in such a way that the information contained in it should be of interest to general entomologists, research specialists on dung beetle natural history, insects systematists, students of entomology, agricultural scientists and insect conservationists. The authors of the book were based in the Scarab Research Group in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa during the planning and first stages of writing of the book. Ute Kryger has since returned to her native Germany after spending six years as a post-doctoral research fellow in the research group. Adrian Davis and Clarke Scholtz are still there; AD as a senior research fellow and CS as Professor of Entomology.

Biodiversity in the Balance - Mitigation and Adaptation Conflicts and Synergies

Climate change and biodiversity loss are both pressing global problems. Efforts are being made to address the former through various mitigation and adaptation activities, but these may have consequences for biodiversity which are not identified or acknowledged. This book reviews how mitigation and adaptation measures in eight key areas: agriculture, forestry, energy, built environment, river and coastal flood management, health, tourism and leisure and conservation, identifying how they may impact positively or negatively on biodiversity. It also recognises the interactions which can occur between them and which may be neutral, synergistic or involve trade-offs. It shown how, by including biodiversity in mitigation and adaptation, co-benefits can be achieved and thus identifies cost-effective approaches to tackling climate change and biodiversity loss. This book will be of interest to researches in climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity and conservation, as well as policymakers involved in formulating adaptation and mitigation strategies and stakeholders engaged in their implementation.

The leafhoppers and planthoppers of Germany (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha)
Patterns and strategies in a highly diverse group of phytophagous insects
Nickel, H.

Auchenorrhyncha, the planthoppers and leafhoppers, occur in high densities and species richness in almost all terrestrial ecosystems, forming an important component of food webs. They may transmit plant pathogens such as viruses and mycoplasmas, and a few species are among the worlds' worst pests of cereals and other crops. Due to the lack of a comprehensive key, the central European fauna has long been neglected by entomologists, and as a consequence, the knowledge of their life history was rather limited. Host plant relations, in particular, were insufficiently known. This work summarises an extensive collection of data combined with a widely scattered literature on a large geographical scale. For the first time, a systematic overview of phenology, food plants, habitat requirements, geographical and altitudinal distribution and economic importance of all Auchenorrhyncha species known from Germany is provided, based on up to date taxonomy. The guild composition of all plant groups at species and family level is analysed and discussed in detail. Further analyses deal with life strategies such as host specificity, dispersal and life cycles. The book is an authoritative synthesis of current knowledge and will be an invaluable reference for all students of biodiversity as well as for ecologists, entomologists, botanists and phytopathologists.

Review of the Spirobolida on Madagascar, with descriptions of twelve new genera, including three "fire millipedes" (Diplopoda)

This issue of Zookeys deals with millipedes from Madagascar, an understudied group from a still little understood place. Here presented are the findings of a 2007 expedition as well as the results from general inventory programs undertaken on Madagascar in the last 10 years. From Madagascar, only three genera of the order Spirobolida were previously known, most of them described more than 100 years ago. To our great surprise the newly collected material included more than 37 undescribed species and no less than 12 new genera, of which 11 are exclusively based on newly discovered species. All species are endemic to Madagascar. The family Spirobolellidae is for the first time recorded from Madagascar with one endemic genus, while all other 14 known genera belong to the family Pachybolidae. Therefore, more genera of Pachybolidae are now known from Madagascar than from continental Africa and India combined. Up to six different Spirobolida genera occur sympatric in the same forest. Three of the discovered genera contain large-bodied species with a conspicuous pitch-blackred colour pattern, the so-called ‘Fire Millipedes’.

Advances in the Systematics of Hymenoptera. Festschrift in Honor of Lubomir Masner

This issue celebrates the 75th birthday of Dr. Lubomir Masner, a source of knowledge, enthusiasm, and inspiration for systematic entomologists in all fields, but especially for students of Hymenoptera. His unflagging dedication to the study of the parasitoid wasps of the superfamilies Proctotrupoidea, Platygastroidea, and Ceraphronoidea has completely transformed our understanding of the richness and evolutionary history of these insects. His zeal and innovation in collecting have not only dramatically enhanced the basis for our understanding of hymenopteran diversity, but also contributed to the development of the Canadian National Collection of Insects into one of the premiere systematic entomology research institutions in the world. Twenty-six authors have contributed to this volume in 17 papers on the systematics of the families Braconidae, Ceraphronidae, Chalcididae, Eucharitidae, Eupelmidae, Eurytomidae, Figitidae, Mymaridae, Platygastridae, Vespidae, and Xiphydriidae. Six new genera and 33 new species are described, encompassing fossil material as well as species from the Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Australasian regions. A short biography of Dr. Masner is accompanied by a bibliography of his scientific papers, a list of taxa he has described over 55 years of research, and a list of taxa named in his honor.

Atlas of Wood Decaying Fungi

The Atlas of Wood Decaying Fungi contains extensive information on the species composition, level of parasitic activity, and the biological and ecological characteristics of this specific group of fungi. This information could help in the development of effective control measures, since wood-boring fungi cause numerous problems and losses in fruit orchards and stored and processed wood. At the same time, it must be stressed that these fungi are an important component of ecosystems and need to be protected: they are a major factor to be considered in the recycling of substrates and nutrients in forest ecosystems, parks, and roadside verges and hedges. This book is addressed to professionals, such as agriculturists, biologists, ecologists, and landscape architects, as well as to amateur biologists and enthusiasts of Nature.

Assessing biodiversity risks with socio-economic methods: The ALARM experience

Humans play an undeniable role in the acceleration of threats to the diversity of ecosystems, species and genes. This book is a response to the urgent need of policy oriented socio-ecological research, profoundly based on empirical evidence.
Socio-environmental patterns and political responses are compared through the use of case studies analyzing a range of pressures to biodiversity. Aquatic bioinvasions in the Ebro River and Lake Izabal exemplify socio-environmental processes linked to river basins. Other cases examine processes at the regional level: the social attitudes to genetically modified organisms in Catalan agriculture, the implementation of a Regional Strategy for Biodiversity in the I^le-de-France, the management of an invasive insect in the city of Paris, and the comparative analysis in Kent (UK) and Tartu (Estonia) county of the effects of the Common Agricultural Policy on pollinators’ diversity. An economic valuation of the decline of pollinators in Germany and Spain, and an analysis of land use changes in the new EU member states focus on processes at the national scale within the EU frame. A case study in Argentina, about the emergence of pesticide resistance in an invasive pest, embodies the relationship between a national state and the processes of the world economy.
The ALARM project aims to promote creative thinking. Inspired by ecological economics, methodologies employed range from multi-criteria evaluation and participatory techniques to social network analysis, valuation of environmental services, scenario modelling and historical analysis. The authors have uniquely explored case-study-based research for socio-economic analyses of biodiversity risks. Emphasis is put both on the lessons learnt from the comparative analysis as well as on the methodological innovations.

Evolution of the beetle hind wing, with special reference to folding (Insecta, Coleoptera)

The present monograph is a highly original and thorough attempt at revising the wing structure of the beetles, with special emphasis placed not only on the venation patterns observed, but also on folding. Combined, all of these patterns are critically re-evaluated to provide new, highly unorthodox insights in beetle evolution. The work is also abundantly illustrated by original drawings showing all the necessary details of beetle wing structure, including shape, venation, sclerotization and folding patterns. The present monograph is indispensable for students in beetle taxonomy, evolution and palaeontology.
Dr. Dmitri Fedorenko, born 1962, is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. His main interests lie in the taxonomy, ecology, geography and evolution of the beetles, the ground-beetles in particular. He is the author of more than 40 scientific papers, including the monograph "Reclassification of world Dyschiriini, with a revision of the Palearctic fauna (Coleoptera, Carabidae)", Moscow–Sofia–St. Petersburg: Pensoft Publishers, 1996.

Advances in the Systematics of Diplopoda II.

This is the second issue of ZooKeys specially devoted to millipede taxonomy, to appear just a couple of months since the publication of the first issue. It also contains three papers, all beautifully and richly illustrated. The first paper again focuses on the family Haplodesmidae (Polydesmida), this time presenting a review of the rather speciose genus Eutrichodesmus which currently contains 24 species, including nine new, mainly cavernicolous ones from China, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia. The second contribution provides a review of the large Euro-Mediterranean genus Glomeris in North Africa, with 11 nominate species currently known from the coastal regions of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Lybia. Three new species are described therein, including two cavernicoles, as well as a number of new synonymies established. The third paper revives and reviews Agathodesmus (Haplodesmidae), a small, previously dubious genus now containing four species, including one new from Australia.

The symphytognathoid spiders of the Gaoligongshan, Yunnan, China (Araneae, Araneoidea): Systematics and diversity of micro-orbweavers

Over a period of 10 years, scientists from a coalition of international institutions surveyed the biota of the Gaoligong mountains in western Yunnan, China. Focal taxa included selected plants, vertebrates, and arthropods. The study area lies at the heart of one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and is home to biomes ranging from subtropical forest to tundra. In this special issue, we report on the results of that survey for micro-orbweaving spiders, cryptic animals mostly less than 1 mm long that build delicate, geometric webs. All told, over 1,000 adult micro-orbweavers were collected and sorted to three dozen species, all new to science. The enormous scale of the world’s biodiversity means that science needs data structures to facilitate organization, aggregation, and instant sharing of data. This publication contributes to major aggregators and indexers of electronic biodiversity data including ZooBank, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Morphbank, and the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), supplementing the traditional paper mode. Typical of publications in taxonomy, this paper is composed of several components including the primary biodiversity data (specimen, locality, and related information), media (e.g., photographs and drawings), text elements (e.g., species descriptions), and nomenclature (e.g., new taxonomic names). O nce these elements are parsed and absorbed by community databases, they can be disseminated, indexed, and recombined in myriad ways inconceivable for static paper publications. The barely imagined potential of these maturing digital resources makes the early 21st century a very exciting historical moment in taxonomy.

Morphology of Baridinae and related groups (Coleoptera, Curculionidae)

This volume contains the first comprehensive review of baridine morphology to date and attempts to present this morphological diversity in a comparative framework by including comparisons of other weevil subfamilies thought to be more closely related. Although this is by no means an exhaustive treatment, it is in hope that this study provides a better understanding of the evolution of this large radiation and the similarities and differences that comprise this group and outline its boundaries. By including over 1000 figures, it was a desire to cover as much of the morphological variation within Baridinae as possible, however, much remains that is not included here. This treatment is being presented in advance of a cladistic analysis of the subfamily based on morphology, thus much of this review pertains to describing structures worthy of inclusion in phylogenetic studies.

A World Catalogue and Bibliography of the Jewel Beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestoidea), Volume 5: Appendices, Bibliography, Indices

The first complete world catalogue of the jewel beetles, the eighth largest beetle family Buprestidae and its small North American sister-group Schizopodidae, since Jan Obenberger's six fascicle (1926-1937) contribution to the Horn & Schenkling Coleopterorum Catalogus. Published in five volumes (3125 pages in total), this catalogue presents a full taxonomic history for all taxa, including fossils, along with distribution and type repository data. The catalogue follows the evolving modern classification which, for Buprestidae, employs 6 subfamilies, 47 tribes, 39 non-nominate subtribes, 513 genera and more than 14700 valid species. In addition, the first large bibliography on the subject concludes the catalogue with more than 8000 citations.

This final volume contains the appendices, including listings of missing or invalid taxa, indices to significant past jewel beetle catalogues or checklists, a table listing each genus and the breakdown of the respective species-group taxa (species, subspecies, synonyms and invalid names), the Bibliography, the three Indices (family, genus and species-group names), a list of errors from the first four volumes, a list of taxa or taxonomic acts published after Volume 1 appeared and an Epilogue.

Sharpshooter Leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellinae). An Illustrated Checklist. Part 1: Old World Cicadellini.

Leafhoppers (Hemiptera Cicadellidae) are among the most abundant and diverse insects. 20,000 species have already been described and many remain to be studied. One subfamily, the Cicadellinae often known as the sharpshooter leafhoppers have been monographed by David Young and contains around 2300 species. They are among the largest species and often brightly coloured. This new volume covers the Old World species in full colour (around 600 species) as an Illustrated Checklist based on Young's original monographs and subsequent papers. The first volume also includes an introduction to the Cicadellinae. Around 90% of the world fauna have been imaged so far (and this volume complements a website of the images). Subsequent volumes will cover New World Cicadellini (around 1200 species) and Proconiini (450 species).

The Diptera of the Seychelles islands

The Seychelles islands are biogeographically interesting, with ancient affinities to Africa and Asia, recent colonising species from the Indo-Pacific and modern introductions. Until recently relatively little has been known about the biodiversity of the islands. This is changed by the series of monographs on the Seychelles fauna, presenting the latest information on all the terrestrial and freshwater animals of the islands. The "Diptera of the Seychelles Islands" includes all 630 recorded from the islands, presenting distribution records, descriptions of many species and assessments of their conservation status.

Species and Communities in Extreme Environments. Festschrift towards the 75th Anniversary and a Laudatio in Honour of Academician Yuri Ivanovich Chernov

Yuri Ivanovich Chernov is one of the greatest modern experts in ecology and biogeography, Arctic regions in particular, not only in Russia but globally. His main monographs are “Nature Zonation and Terrestrial Animal Life” (1975), “Structure of the Animal Population of the Subarctic” (1978) and “Life of the Tundra” (1980), all in Russian. The latter book was later published in English as “The Living Tundra” (1985) with Cambridge University Press and, together with the second edition, for 20 years became the only truly indispensable manual of tundra science in the world. In the present collection of papers, some of Y. I. Chernov's students or followers attempt to reflect upon a number of the synecological and biogeographical paradigms he advanced. The constituent papers seem to unite their authors' urges towards arriving from facts to a phenomenon, and from phenomena to patterns, this being so characteristic to the way of thinking of Yuri Ivanovich himself.
The volume contains review papers on yeast, myxomicetes, soil microfungi, mosses, higher plants, nematodes, oribatid mites, millipedes, spiders, collembolans, ants, beetles, butterflies, and birds. The book is addressed to botanists and zoologists, ecologists, biogeographers and anyone interested in the nature of the polar and adjacent regions..

Climatic Risk Atlas of European Butterflies

The overarching aim of the atlas is to communicate the potential risks of climatic change to the future of European butterflies. The main objectives are to: (1) provide a visual aid to discussions on climate change risks and impacts on biodiversity and thus contribute to risk communication as a core element of risk assessment; (2) present crucial data on a large group of species which could help to prioritise conservation efforts in the face of climatic change; (3) reach a broader audience through the combination of new scientific results with photographs of all treated species and some straight forward information about the species and their ecology.
The results of this atlas show that climate change is likely to have a profound effect on European butterflies.Ways to mitigate some of the negative impacts are to (1) maintain large populations in diverse habitats; (2) encourage mobility across the landscape; (3) reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses; (4) allow maximum time for species adaptation; (4) conduct further research on climate change and its impacts on biodiversity.
The book is a result of long-term research of a large international team of scientists, working at research institutes and non-governmental organizations, many within the framework of projects funded by the European Commission. It is published as Special Issue 1 of BioRisk, a new open-access journal of biodiversity and environmental sciences. It addresses conservationists working in research and/or policy making, ecologists, climatologists, biogeographers, entomologists, and members of the public society who care about the worrying trends in changes to the world’s climate and nature.

High Altitude Isopoda Arachnida and Myriapoda in the Old World

Large groups of non-insect arthropods such as the terrestrial Isopoda, Arachnida and Myriapoda recorded higher than 2,200 meters above sea-level are listed from all mountain systems of Africa, Europe and Asia (including New Guinea). The maximum altitude for each species, genus, family, order and class is reported. This is the first compilation of this kind ever produced. The groups are compared between the different regions and the levels of endemism are outlined. A short description of each region shows the most peculiar features of high-montane terrestrial life in the Balkan and Iberian peninsulas, the Alps, the Tetras, the Caucasus, the Himalayas, as well as in the mountains of Turkey, Central Asia, South-East Asia, Japan, New Guinea, the Cameroon, eastern and southern Africa, Madagascar, North Africa, the Canary Islands and others. The trend in the number of species and genera decreasing with altitude, termed "taxogradient", is analyzed. Such new terms as "hybsobiont" and "hybsoendemic" are also introduced. The bibliography contains more than 1,300 references.

A Treatise on the Western Hemisphere Caraboidea (Coleoptera) Their classifi cation, distributions, and ways of life Volume II (Carabidae – Nebriiformes 2 – Cicindelitae)

A synthesis of the taxonomy, distributions, and ways of life of the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) dwelling in the Western Hemisphere. Under each taxon account, the historical taxonomy, distribution at the country and/or state/province level, and way of life, including Macrohabitat, Microhabitat, Dispersal abilities, Seasonal occurrence, and Behavior are elaborated. Selected references for each taxon are given in these categories and an extensive bibliography of Tiger Beetle references for the Western Hemisphere is presented. The sections on way of life include the following: Macrohabitat summary, altitudinal distribution in meters, as well as a general altitudinal classification, habitat/microhabitat details, seasonality, and under Behavior, there are notes on diel activity, adult/larval hibernation, prey items, immatures, over wintering, and other pertinent notes presented. Details of dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, i.e. wing condition, flight data, walking, running, swimming, and climbing records, as far as is known, is included. This work, planned as a seven-volume companion to Larochelle & Lariviere (2003), will be an indispensable tool or anybody interested in ground-beetles per se and their natural history, as well as their role in the environment and importance to agriculture, conservation, forestry. National, regional, and local libraries will find this set of tools well used due to the incredible amount of information that is summarized at these geographical levels. This work follows a modified classification of Erwin (1984), and the nomenclature of Lorenz (2005), as updated on a six-month cycle by Erwin (e-data base, NMNH, Smithsonian Institution) from recently published literature.

The Sheep-Guarding Dog of Abruzzo

The Author describes the dog kept and bred by the shepherds of mountainous Abruzzo in Italy to repel wolves and bears from their flocks. The way it behaves and works, its life history, and its relationship to the environment are recounted. The dog is placed in the wider perspective of the pastoral dogs of the Old World and historical documents are provided to indicate the antiquity of the type. The degenerating effect of kennel-breeding for conformation is stressed. The book does not contain instructions for the private fancier intending to keep one of these dogs as a companion.

Fifty Years of Flukes and Flippers: A Little History and Personal Adventures With Dolphins, Whales and Sea Lions (1958-2007)

This book is a combination history of some aspects of Marine Mammal Science and a narrative of a special voyage by the author into the world of marine mammals. Although the study of marine mammals has a very long history, the modern era of research did not start in any serious way until the 1950's. At the end of the War, Marineland of Florida came to life and provided a whole new experience for the general public to view and study dolphins (primarily the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin), up close and personal. It was also the start of a new approach and interest in research to understand how these amazing mammals have adapted to the marine environment. This was the start of many opportunities to try and answer some of the questions that have intrigued scientist for centuries. Since the author's introduction to this new endeavor started in 1956 the book focuses on the development of this fascinating field of science from that period up to the present. The story is told from his perspective as an active participant.Today there are thousands of dedicated young scientists working with marine mammals. Unfortunately few of them know much of the fascinating history of their science. It is our hope that this book will address that issue.Dr. William E. Evans, is a Professor Emeritus of the Marine Biology Department, Texas A&M University Galveston. He is one of the first group of scientists that made up the cadre of the Navy's Marine Mammal Program which started in the 1960' at a Naval Base in Southern California. His primary area of research during his 10 years with the US Navy program was marine mammal communion and echolocation. It resulted in the design of a special research platform for observing and recording dolphins underwater and for radio telemetric study of several species. During his career, Dr Ewans was a Director of the Hubbs Sea World Research Institute, a Chairman of the Marine Mammal Commission with over sight responsibilities for the Marine Mammal Protection, Associate Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Dean of the Texas Maritime College. Currently he a Guest Professor at the University of Notre Dame, and Managing Editor of the American Midland Naturalist. Dr. Evans is the author of over one hundred scientific and popular articles. He is the author and co-author of four books including a childrens book about a Gray Whale GIGI.

Sea Slugs of the Red Sea

This book brings together, for the first time, all known information on the species of sea slugs of the Red Sea, belonging to 130 genera and 52 families. The contents include discussions on taxonomy, distribution, bionomics, habitats, and ecology. An introductory chapter describes in detail the history of studies on sea slugs of the Red Sea, and includes a section reproducing the old engravings, most which have never been seen since their original publication. The book is excellently illustrated by nearly 500 photos of living animals in their natural habitats, representing some 189 species, many of which are depicted for the first time. This book will be of interest to marine biologists, systematists, ecologists, divers and all lovers of the incredible biodiversity of the Red Sea.

Dr. Nathalie Yonow has been studying opisthobranchs for over 20 years, following an obsession with marine biology since a child living in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Greece, and Wales. She earned both her B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Swansea University (Wales, United Kingdom). Nathalie Yonow has since been invited on a number of expeditions collecting opisthobranchs from the Red Sea, Mauritius, and the Maldives, as well as being given other Indo-Pacific collections to identify - Ambon, Chagos, Socotra, Reunion, and the Persian Gulf. These form the substance of many publications, and are still on–going research. Her first love is the Red Sea, and her research is based on her own collections as well as additional specimens from museums and enthusiastic divers. Dr. Yonow has contributed sea slug chapters to a number of taxonomic publications from regions ranging from northern European to East African shores.

"This book is the first extensive summary of much information scattered in a vast and mostly inaccessible scientific literature on Opisthobranchia in the Red Sea. The identification key and high quality pictures make an accurate determination very easy. Information on biology, such as food, seasons of occurrence, reproductive biology, and wider geographical distribution for each species render this book also very useful for all interested in these fantastic sea slugs..."
– Professor Heike Waegele, University of Bonn, Germany.

“It was with great interest that I went through your book - it really explains your subject in a way that makes the book readable not only for specialists but also for the lay reader. This is how scientific books should be!”
– Dr. Guenther Schefbeck, Austrian Parliament.

“It is wonderful finally to find a book of this quality which I can easily take on my diving trips to the Red Sea (and western Indian Ocean). It is light-weight and compact, and user friendly in the marine environment…”
- Pam Kemp, photographer and dive master, U.K.

An Anecdotal History of Nematology

Nematology is not only about those lovely Nobel prize winning creatures, nematodes, but also about the people who work with them, the nematologists. Your good friends Bengt Eriksson, David McNamara and John Webster have cajoled a whole galaxy of story-telling nematologists to reminisce about their loved ones, their nematodes, and to tell us how they got to know them so well. It is all disclosed in "An Anecdotal History of Nematology". It is good nematology, but it's different, and you will be able to read the other side of some of our nematological world's most fascinating discoveries and about their discoverers. The book is addressed to all who love to work on nematodes. It will be of interest also to historians of science and to any zoological library.

The Dragonflies and Damselflies of South Africa

Dragonflies are a beautiful, important and conspicuous component of freshwater, whether still or flowing. They are also important indicators of freshwater quality and condition, which is significant for current and future conservation initiatives in South Africa. The country's dragonflies are particularly interesting as many are special or endemic to the area, making it a part of the world of great conservation significance. Sadly however, many of these endemic species are highly threatened, especially by invasive alien trees which shade out their habitat. This book is about this exciting dragonfly fauna. Besides aiming at increasing awareness of these lovely and sensitive insects, it enables their identification, using several approaches, from simple flick-through to the use of comprehensive identification keys. Each species is also given a Dragonfly Biotic Index, covering a spectrum from the most common, widespread and tolerant species through to the most threatened, rare and sensitive ones.

Michael Samways is Professor and Chair of the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology, Stellenbosch University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa and a Fellow of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has published 260 scientific papers and written several books on insect biology and conservation, the most recent of which is Insect Diversity Conservation, Cambridge University Press. He has won several awards, and in the last two years, these include the Stellenbosch University Rector's Award for Research Excellence, the John Herschel Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa, and the Senior Captain Scott Medal from the South African Academy for Science and Art. Michael is on several international editorial boards and involved with various international committees devoted to invertebrate conservation. Indeed, his research team is dedicated to the conservation of invertebrates and other biodiversity, which so enrich our planet.

Plant-Arthropod Interactions in the Early Angiosperm History

Paleontologists just recently opened their eyes to the wealth of fossil documents relevant to plant - arthropod interaction and are busy now accumulating raw data. Perhaps the richest regional collection of interaction traces came from the mid-Cretaceous deposits of the Negev Desert, Israel, encompassing the time interval of the rise and basal radiation of angiosperms - the flowering plants. The arthropods (insects and mites) inserting their eggs in the leaves and making leaf mines and galls were discovering new possibilities for endophytic life that the flowering plants provided. Their morphological disparity suggests a diversification race, in which the angiosperms failed to override their leaf parasites. Only a small fraction of insect diversity is represented by body fossils that belong to one extinct and nine extant families of beetles and cockroaches mostly. Because similar structures are produced on leaves by parasitic arthropods of different systematic alliances, a purely morphological classification is worked out for the trace fossils, with but tentative assignments to natural taxa, referring to distinct types of parasitic behavior. It is the evolution of behavior that is documented by the trace fossils. The body fossils and parasitic traces represent morphologies and behavioral traits fairly advanced for their geological age. The expression, abundance, co-occurrence, and host specialization of parasitic structures, as well as the marks of predation on mines and galls betray regulatory mechanisms of plant - arthropod interaction, analyzed in the broad context of ecosystem evolution, paleogeography and climate change.

Acarorum Catalogus I. Acariformes: Calyptostomatoidea (Calyptostomatidae), Erythraeoidea (Smarididae, Erythraeidae)

The first volume of the series "Acarorum Catalogus" is focused on the superfamilies Calyptostomatoidea and Erythraeoidea of the world. More than 750 species are listed therein, with synonymies and citations in various papers. The book also contains a list of by-country distributions and a list of the authors who published on any known species from these groups. There are other lists including hosts of the larvae of these mites, species inquirendae, and a synopsis of the many new combinations. The bibliography alone consists of more than 1,000 titles. The first volume of the series virtually represents a pattern to take in the next volumes on other mite or tick groups to follow.

Annotated Catalogue of the Ampulicidae, Sphecidae, and Crabronidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) of Turkey

The present work is the first complete catalogue of the digger wasps (families Ampulicidae, Crabronidae, and Sphecidae) of Turkey. During 162 years of exploration, 715 nominal names have been proposed for the 530 species and 19 subspecies in 78 genera currently recognized for the Turkish fauna. Catalogued genera are arranged within the three families mentioned above based on the latest concepts regarding the phylogenetic relationships of digger wasps and bees. Citations to the original description are given for each valid species, followed by a summary of previous provincial records in Turkey. Maps illustrating provincial distributions are also provided for each species. Eight species names are corrected for nomenclatural reasons, one species is synonymized, and lectotypes are designated for four species group taxa. The genus Dynatus, previously recorded from Turkey on the basis of the Neotropical D. nigripes (Westwood, 1832), is here excluded from the Turkish fauna. The catalogue includes 138 reference titles and 551 maps. The book will be an essential addition to any zoological library.

The Mammals of Wisconsin

The last book by Professor Charles A. Long “The Wild Mammals of Wisconsin” is a comprehensive treatise on mammals found in Wisconsin, updating information on classification, identification, geography and other concepts of their biology. These include ecology (and status), habitats (including dens and nests), reproduction (both development and aging), and estimates of home range, movements, and density (with seasonality whenever possible). Geographic and micro-geographic variation of races and species are described, based on thousands of preserved specimens, many listed as essential specimens examined. The analysis also includes Upper Michigan, northern Illinois, and occasionally even eastern Minnesota. The problem of appropriate names is discussed, with fair attention to diverse opinions. Taxonomic synonymies include original names, invalid homonyms and synonyms that have been used, and the names deemed acceptable. The phylogeny of higher taxonomic groups, such as families and orders, provide curious histories and adaptations. Pre-historic and exterminated mammals are described, including the discovery of an elk-moose. Modern concepts, such as evolution and speciation and the biome concept are introduced. Genetics, physiology, animal diseases, relation of hosts to humanity, ecological succession, and zoogeography are discussed. An especially appealing section on former naturalists who studied Wisconsin mammals includes some surprises: John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, Hartley H. T. Jackson, and the first woman mammalogist – Martha Maxwell of Portage. Detailed accounts are given for 69 species (not counting the few now exterminated), in 17 families and seven orders. A glossary, four appendices, and a magnificent bibliography are at the end. Countless illustrations include grand wildlife artists of past and present. To quote Long: “All together we hope to express tribute to nature, and wildlife poetry and art.”

Prime Butterflies Areas in Bulgaria
Abadjiev, S Beshkov S

Studies of butterflies in Bulgaria have been carried out for more than 150 years. While the species distribution was more or less known, their conservation was not a special priority until recently. Previously the conservation efforts were mainly focused on a particular species (the decline of butterflies has been recognized for many years) and not on the areas which they inhabit. The main object here was to identify and describe the most important sites for butterflies in the country, implementing a simple method using target species, in order to help the definition of the Bulgarian part of the European Union's NATURA 2000 Network. Fifty NATURA 2000 sites are properly listed and described, and in this respect the book can serve as NATURA 2000 Guide for Bulgaria. The book is richly illustrated by color photos of species and habitats, maps, it includes species listings and data on conservation and protection, as well as basic GIS data on a CD. It is adressed to lepidopterologists, biogeographers, conservationists, NATURA 2000 workers and anyone interested in the nature of the Balkans.

Catalogue of Aleocharine Rove Beetles of Canada and Alaska (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharine)
Gouix, N Klimaszewski, J

The first comprehensive catalogue of difficult to identify and poorly known Canadian and Alaskan aleocharine rove beetles is presented. Aleocharine rove beetles represent one of the great monophyletic radiations in the history of life. This radiation is characterized by diverse habitat, microecological and behavioural specialization in various lineages. Their small size, strongly flexible body, defensive strategies, excellent mobility and their ability to adapt to various microhabitats enabled them to compete with other arthropods and succeed. This catalogue is meant to bridge the gap in our knowledge and provide the most recent list of synonyms and valid species occurring in Canada and Alaska in a classification that reflects the current state of knowledge. In total, 387 valid species classified in 92 genera and 14 tribes, and 351 synonyms and 6 uncertain records are reported. Compiled information is provided on the tribes, genera, species and synonyms with references to the original descriptions for genera and species, the status of each species, references to revision and monographic publication if applicable, and a summary of current distribution of valid species. There are 312 references on the subject and 102 colour images of species representing genera included in the catalogue. The authors hope that this publication will stimulate further efforts to unravel the history of Canadian and Alaskan rove beetles fauna.

A Treatise on the Western Hemisphere Caraboidea (Coleoptera). Their classification, distributions, and ways of life. Volume I (Trachypachidae, Carabidae - Nebriiformes 1)
Erwin, TL

A synthesis of the classification, distributions, and ways of life of the ground-beetles (Coleoptera: Caraboidea) dwelling in the Western Hemisphere. Under each taxon account, the historical nomenclature, distribution at the country and/or state/province level, and way of life, including Macrohabitat, Microhabitat, Dispersal abilities, Seasonal occurrence, and Behavior are elaborated. Selected references for each taxon are given in these categories and an extensive, nearly complete bibliography of Caraboidea references for the Western Hemisphere is presented. The sections on way of life include the following: Macrohabitat summary, altitudinal distribution in meters, as well as a general altitudinal classification, habitat/microhabitat details, seasonality, and under Behavior notes on diel activity, adult/larval hibernation, prey items, immatures, over wintering, and other notes on behavior are presented. Details of dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, i.e. wing condition, flight data, walking, running, burrowing and climbing records, as far as is known is included. Species introduced are noted with their probable area of origin. This work, planned as a seven volume companion to Larochelle & Lariviere (2003), will be an indispensable tool for anybody interested in ground-beetles per se and their natural history, as well as their role in the environment and importance to agriculture, conservation, and forestry. National, regional, and local libraries will find this set of tools well used due to the incredible amount of information that is summarized at these geographical levels. This work follows the classification of Erwin (1984), and the nomenclature of Lorenz (2005), as updated on a six month cycle by Erwin (e-data base, NMNH, Smithsonian Institution).

Morphology of the Auditory and Vestibular Organs in Mammals, with Emphasis on Marine Species
Solntseva, GN

The basic directions of the structural evolution of the outer, middle and inner ears in representatives of a wide ecological range of mammals (terrestrial, subterranean, aerial, semi-aquatic and aquatic forms, including marine mammals) have been traced in this monograph for the first time. The broad spectrum of the species studied and the application of modern anatomical, optical and bio-mechanical methods allowed the author to describe previously unknown structural features of the peripheral part of the auditory system in animals with a varied specialization of hearing. The influence of ecological and evolutionary factors on the structural organization of the auditory organ was analyzed. The ecological and morphological approach was useful in revealing the fact that the peculiarities in the auditory organ structure in different mammalian groups were stipulated by the animals' adaptation to definite acoustic features of habitat. Morphological and functional adaptations of the peripheral part of the auditory system directed to the optimization of auditory sensitivity in different habitats proved to be principal in evolution. Particular attention was paid to the less widely studied orders of mammals (pinnipeds, cetaceans), being of interest both from the point of view of their echolocation abilities (in dolphins) and the influence of water habitat on the morphological adaptation development in the structure of the peripheral part of the auditory analyzer in semi-aquatic and aquatic species. The book is illustrated with a large number of original micro-photos, pictures, drawings and is aimed at morphologists, zoologists, ecologists and specialists, working in the field of bionics, as well as students and tutors of biological and medical departments in institutes and universities.
Galina N. Solntseva is a Professor at the Laboratory for Bioacoustics in the A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution Russian Academy of Sciences. She is a well-known specialist in the field of the evolutionary morphology of hearing. G.N. Solntseva has studied the peripheral part of the auditory system in representatives of different ecological groups of mammals for many years. She has taken part in numerous marine expeditions in the Black, Caspian, White Seas and in the Sea of Okhotsk in order to collect morphological material and this has allowed her to gather a unique (in terms of volume and species diversity) collection of morphological material on marine mammals. G.N. Solntseva is the author of more than a hundred scientific works in this field, including the monograph "The Auditory System of Mammals", issued in 1979 by the publishing house "Nauka".

Riccati Equations
Egorov, AI

In this book, scalar, matrix and operator Riccati equations are considered. Theoretical questions and practical methods of solution of these equations are expounded. The necessary auxiliary facts from algebra, functional analysis and Lie group analysis are given. Theory is illustrated with solutions of numerous examples. The matrix Riccati equations are presented completely. Lie groups on matrices theory have been advanced for an analysis of these equations. Theoretical questions concerning matrix and operator equations are dealt with based on a variety of applied problems from mathematical physics, optimal control of finite dimensional systems and distributed parameters systems. Alexander Ivanovich Egorov, born 1930, D. Sc. (Physics & Mathematics), Professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, leading researcher at the Program Systems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A Field Guide to Little Known Genetically Engineered Organisms Including Revisionary Interpretations About Their Impact on World History
Avise, J

The High-flow Cow (pictured on the front cover) is just one of many remarkable organisms recently created by the biotechnology industry. Here the author guides readers on a fascinating behind-the-scenes journey into the little-known world of genetic engineering. Not only are field marks, behaviors, habitats, and geographic ranges provided for 35 of the world’s most top-secret genetically engineered species, but so too are described the historical sagas and personal dramas behind each creature’s artificial manufacture. From Migratory Chickens and Marijuana-sniffing Dogs to Fire-retardant Trees, Square Tomatos, and Oil-drinking Bacteria, the creatures described in this Field Guide give new meaning to the old adage that “fiction is stranger than truth."
John C. Avise is a Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California at Irvine, and a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to hundreds of publications in scientific journals, he has written a wide variety of textbooks and trade books, including an entirely serious treatise on the biotechnology industry entitled The Hope, Hype, and Reality of Genetic Engineering.

Artenschutzprogramm fur die Gekielte Smaragdlibelle (Oxygastra curtisii) in Deutschland an der Our / Species Protection Programme for the Orange-spotted Emerald (Oxygastra curtisii) in Germany - the Example of the Our River Population
Ott, J Schorr, M Trockur, B Lingenfelder, U

The series "Invertebrate Ecology and Conservation Monographs" is launched by Pensoft Publishers on behalf of a wide team of specialists from all around the world. It is published in 4 issues per year. The first two volumes appeared in January 2007. The main aim of the series is to attract the attention of both academics and society to model studies in invertebrate ecology and conservation. It is also intended to include in-depth studies supported by detailed data, which nowadays are rarely published as complete works because of their volume, but which are often much more sustainable than many high impact journal papers. The present volume 3 focuses on the Orange-spotted emerald Oxygastra curtisii - a slender, medium sized dragonfly with bright green eyes. The species was first described from Britain in 1834, but has become extinct in that country. Subsequently, the species was found in Germany between 1940 and 1943 on the river Sieg in Northrhine-Westfalia, and from where it later disappeared as a consequence of habitat destruction. It was then not seen in Germany for decades and as a consequence the species was classified on the national red lists as "extinct". However, in 1999, it was discovered by chance at the river Our, which forms the border between Germany and Luxembourg. As the species is listed in the Annexes II and IV of the EC Habitats' Directive (92/43/EWG), this newly-discovered population immediately received special attention by odonatologists and nature conservationists. In addition, the governmental agencies were obliged to take special action to protect this population. The nearest populations are on the river Ourthe in Belgium, and at the river Meuse in France. In 2005 and 2006, a species protection programme for the river Our population of Oxygastra curtisii was begun, on behalf of the Landesamt fur Umwelt, Wasserwirtschaft und Gewerbeaufsicht (LUWG) (Federal Agency for Environmental Protection, Water Resources, Factory Safety and Health Control). The protection measures put in place are an excellent example of targeted species conservation that is supported by detailed studies on ecology, bionomics and habitat preferences. The book is for conservationists, limnologists, landscape ecologists, landscape planners, as well as all dragonfly lovers.

Annotated Catalogue of the Carabid Beetles of Albania (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Gueorguiev, B.V.

This catalogue summarizes all available literature records and a lot of new material revised or determined by the author in various European museums and private collections. At present the carabid fauna of Albania can be considered as well-studied. The catalogue includes references to or data for 543 species, 103 genera and 31 tribes of Carabidae. Several dozen taxa of specific or supraspecific rank are added for the first time to the fauna of either the Balkan Peninsula or Albania. A moderate taxonomic contribution based on a study of types, topotypes or series of previously problematic species or subspecies from Albania and the neighbouring countries is also presented; as a result, 38 various taxonomic changes (new synonyms, revalidations, new statuses etc.) are introduced. All species are listed with detailed localities and references. The book is addressed to specialists in coleopterology and entomology, biogeographers and nature conservationists, collectors and all ground beetle lovers.
"Without doubt, this excellent catalogue, compiled with diligence and knowledge, will be an important tool for anyone, not only specialists on Balkan Carabidae, and will improve our insights into the systematics and distribution of carabid beetles. The hope of the author to place Albania with this catalogue side by side to Bulgaria (certainly the best-known regional fauna of Carabidae in the Balkan Peninsula, catalogued in 1995 by the same author and his father) is surely fulfilled." Jungle Bugs in the Night (Nocturnal Activities of Insects & Spiders in Tropical Forests of the World)
Purser, B

This beautifully illustrated book comprises 297 photos of living insects and spiders, demonstrating a little known aspect of entomology for there exists no popular literature treating the nocturnal activities of these fascinating creatures. Few have had the time - or courage - to carry a camera quietly through the jungle at night. The text and photos introduce the reader to the various types of tropical forest and their smaller inhabitants. A chapter illustrates the many ways in which one may observe noctural life in the jungle, and the special techniques necessary to photograph bugs and vegetation in these dripping forests. Together with its photos, this book will be of considerable interest to Nature photographers. Two chapters are devoted to the more unexpected facets of nocturnal life: colour, structure and, especially, behaviour, aspects which are rarely - if ever - treated in text-books. Photography of these reclusive creatures has involved many patient hours of standing and sitting quietly within the darkened forests of Australia, New Guinea, Malaysia, Madagascar, West Africa, Central America and, especially, Amazonia. Observation has involved many long nights, from sunset to dawn, at altitudes varying from
sea-level to 4000 meters, at temperatures ranging from 30° to near zero. The variety and behaviour of jungle bugs under these hightly variable conditions give the reader a very good insight into the private lives of these creatures. All photos have been taken by the author, each photo being discussed and integrated in the adjacent text; in that a good photo is worth a thousand words, this text is reduced to a minimum. However, humerous incidents and personal remarks have not been neglected, these making reading agreeable.
The author, a Naturalist from birth, has worked (and lived) in tropical forests for nearly 50 years. An experienced photographer and scientist, he describes his scientific observations and experiences in a language which all, both amateur and professional, will appreciate.

Ecological Traits and Genetic Variation in Amazonian Populations of the Neotropical Millipede Poratia obliterata (Kraus, 1960) (Diplopoda: Pyrgodesmidae) (Brazil)
Natalie Bergholz

The periodic flood pulse of the Amazon River has been the main controlling factor in the local ecosystems for at least two million years. Numerous adaptations, in some cases along with speciation, have evolved in local terrestrial invertebrates. The small millipede Poratia obliterata (Kraus, 1960), which probably originates from the Andes, is currently known from a remarkably broad range of Central Amazonian biotopes, i.e. various seasonal inundation forests, upland forest and plantations. Like most native millipedes, P. obliterata appears to escape flooding by tree ascents. Such developed survival strategies adaptive to annual inundation can either reflect ecological plasticity or implicate ecological speciation, .i.e. ‘biotope-specific races’ or ecotypes. To assess the causal mode of adaptation, ecological studies with genetic analyses are combined in this work. Comparing the distribution, biotope range, population subdivision and genetic diversity of different millipedes, the species P. obliterata appears to feature a generalist strategy. The book shows low divergence between Amazonian populations of this diverse and widespread species, which seems to cope well with various biotopes and thus successfully invaded seasonal inundation forests. The book is addressed to specialists in evolution, ecological genetics, ecology and conservation of wetlands, millipede research and conservation.

Ecology of an Almost Extinct Population of the Scarce Swallowtail Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758)

R. Steiner, G. Hermann and J. Settele

The present volume presents results of a study on a formerly large metapopulation of the Scarce Swallowtail in South-Western Germany. In particular, habitat preferences of eggs and larval stages are quantified and the general decline and finally the extinction of the population is thoroughly documented. It is a typical example of the effects of insufficient conservation measures, which mainly resulted from wrong prioritisation and from ignoring available knowledge. The book is addressed to conservationists, butterfly specialists, entomologists, and population ecologists.

Forests and Dragonflies (4th WDA Symposium of Odonatology, Pontevedra, Spain, July 2005)
Rivera, AC

Over the world, forests provide diverse habitats for a range oforganisms, including dragonflies and other animals, that at a first sight seem not to depend on forests. For instance, Macromia splendens, one of Europe’s most endangered dragonflies (cover), uses forest roads as hunting places, and larvae are sometimes found amongst tree roots. As the authors of this book show, dragonflies are highly dependent on forest cover and composition, and this is true from the boreal forests to the tropics. The aim of this book is therefore to explore the ways in which forests affect dragonfly life, and to show that forests are much more than places where timber is produced.

Caves and Speleology in Bulgaria
Beron, P Daaliev, T Jalov, A

This book summarizes our knowledge of the caves and cave research in Bulgaria. The first Bulgarian caving society was founded as early as 1929, but the first cave animals, fossils and archaeological artefacts in Bulgarian caves had been found and published even earlier, at the end of the 19th century. However, sporting speleology was established much later, since the restoration of organized caving in 1958. By that time, only some 200 caves had been known in Bulgaria, largely highly superficially. At present they outnumber 5,100, most of them being well-documented. Cave animals have been recorded from more than 700 Bulgarian caves. Bulgarian cavers have discovered and surveyed 62 caves longer than 1,000 m, as well as 52 potholes deeper than 100 m. Bulgarian caving is currently well-organized network of caving clubs, including more than 800 members. Over the past 40 years, Bulgarian cavers have organized the exploration of hundreds of caves in more than 45 countries, including independent missions to Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cuba, China, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. Some of them also participated in such complex international expeditions as the British Speleological Expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1975. Numerous new animal species have been described by Bulgarian specialists from caves in different parts of the world. The Bulgarian Federation of Speleology has initiated the creation of a Balkan speleological union. One of the major achievements of Bulgarian speleology has become the compilation of the Main Card Index of Bulgarian caves. Keeping in mind all these achievements, time has come to publish both in Bulgarian and English a compendium containing, besides other things, concise descriptions of 260 of he most important and spectacular caves and potholes of Bulgaria. An outline is also given of some general subjects like Biospeleology, Speleopalaeontology, Speleoarcheology, Speleomineralogy, Geomorphology and Hydrogeology of Karst, Cave diving, Cave rescue and others. The book contains data on various aspects of research carried out by Bulgarian cavers all over the world, as well as biographical information about many Bulgarian cavers and cave scientists. The publication is richly illustrated by numerous colour pictures, graphs and maps.

For the first time in the literature concerning the fly family Sarcophagidae, a taxonomic synthesis is provided of the subfamilies Sarcophaginae and Paramacronychiinae in the Near East, this being presented in a scientific way with the use of binominal nomenclature in full agreement with the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

The monograph includes 82 species, of which 29 have been discovered in this area by the author. These species could be correctly identified based both on available determination keys and, above all, the original illustrations of the microscopic structures of the male genitalia. In all cases their geographic distribution is given, often the descriptions being also accompanied by critical observations and taxonomic updates.

This work is addressed to specialists in agricultural and forest entomology, biogeography and parasitology, as well as in human and veterinary medicine. It is also of general interest to students and teachers in the field of natural sciences.

Atlas of the Millipedes (Diplopoda) of Britain and Ireland
Lee, P

This publication is the culmination of more than 30 years of data collection by over 500 naturalists throughout Britain and Ireland, especially those members of the British Myriapod and Isopod Group and its predecessor, the British Myriapod Group. From its outset the British Myriapod Survey established a system for the collection of ecological information alongside distribution records. This approach was unique to the Myriapod and Isopod Survey recording schemes and only now is its value being recognised by other invertebrate recording schemes. It has enabled the production of an atlas based on more than 47 000 records that is so much more than a simple collection of distribution maps for the 62 species of millipede found in Britain. Analysis of the ecological data provided for almost 80% of the species records provides an insight into the habitat preferences of this important but undervalued group of animals. The results should be of interest to a much wider audience than the committed myriapodologists.

The inclusion of colour photographs within this publication also marks a new departure for the BRC series of atlases. It may be somewhat surprising that a work on millipedes is the first to show this innovation. In contrast to birds, butterflies or beetles, millipedes are not often pictured in books and to the general naturalist or layman the reasons are self evident. However, the fascinating body forms and ornamentation and the often attractive colour patterns exhibited by the species illustrated in this book should finally discredit such misconceptions; millipedes can be beautiful!

"This new volume will be of great value in conservation work, allowing research workers and planners to see in which types of habitat and microhabitat the different species may be found and which of these require to be protected in order to maintain viable populations of the species in which they are interested. A further feature and major strength of this volume is the placing of the British and Irish fauna in a European context, evidently permitting abetter understanding of the species' distributions and the relative importance of the British and Irish populations globally. Because of the attention paid to sound ecological principles and its bio-geographical attributes this atlas should appeal to a broader field of readers than the title might indicate. It reveals distribution patterns that are mirrored in other groups of organisms and is a model of its kind." - Desmond Kime

Mare Nostrum, Neogene and Anthropic Natural History of the Mediterranean Basin, with Emphasis on the Levant
Por, FD Dimentman, C

The Mediterranean world, the sea, the islands and the shores facing it, is a self-centered microcosm subjected to a very agitated geological history during the Neogene. At the same time, this region absorbed the profound influence of the earliest human cultures. The present book by two researchers from the Hebrew University presents the wide panorama of this interaction. Regional earth science, oceanography, marine and inland flora and fauna, together with regional anthropology and ancient history are for the first time presented on equal footing in this well-illustrated book. In the corner of the Levant, the interdependence between the water bodies of the Rift Valley, the earliest waves of human settlement and the emergent agro-pastoral culture are especially in evidence and a source for management efforts even today.

The most updated knowledge about the environmental history of the region together with the exciting new oceanographic discoveries and processes are presented alongside with the human impact - prehistorical, classical and contemporary.

The resulting symbiosis between sea, land and society created a homogenous circum-Mediterranean nature and culture. Biogeography and human geography are inextricable. "Mare Nostrum" is the best example of an anthropic environment, seasoned by long-standing human influence and therefore less prone to modern induced imbalance. It maintained its beauty and attractiveness as the world's chief target for tourism.

The book is a primer for integrative Mediterranean environmental studies. It is a widely regional synthesis of fields like historical geology, plant and animal biogeography, oceanography, human history and societal impact - fields which received in the past only parochial treatments. First in its kind, it can serve as a basic textbook which provides a guardedly optimistic academic message, instead of the many doomsday previsions.

Ephemeroptera of South America, Aquatic Biodiversity of Latin America, Volume 2
Dominguez, E Molineri, C Pescador, ML Hubbard, MD Nieto, C

For many years, students from numerous countries have complained about the lack of "tools" to identify aquatic invertebrates from Latin America. Keys found in accepted textbooks are mostly limited, superficial or too popular-science. On the other hand, more advanced keys in academic books on aquatic invertebrates fail to cover Neotropical representatives in due detail. The few that do, however, also show too many defects in scope and presentation to be considered up-to-date. An international team of editors combined their efforts with Pensoft Publishers to launch a new major series on the aquatic biodiversity of Latin America. About 15 monographs, written by scientists from various countries, will offer a new, unrivalled view of the marvellous aquatic world of South America! The series is addressed to zoologists, ecologists, hydrobiologists, biogeographers, conservationists and students interested in aquatic biodiversity. The series will be an imminent tool for any biological library.

The Frogs of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands
Menzies, J

This is a book about the frogs of New Guinea, where they came from, how they live and why there are so many species. It is not intended to be a taxonomic treatise and no new species are described, nor are any major taxonomic changes proposed. With over three hundred species now recognised in the Papuan biogeographic region, it has not been possible to give more that a short specific description of each but a full bibliography will facilitate readers' access to original descriptions or subsequent revisions, should this be needed. References to the widely scattered literature on the frog fauna of the region is, for the first time, brought together under one cover.
The author lived, taught and carried out research in Papua New Guinea for twenty-five years and is now a visiting reserach fellow at the University of Adelaide in Australia and, concurrently, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the Universty of Papua New Guinea. He has published numerous papers on the biology of New Guinea's mammals and amphibians and, in conjunction with anthropologist and botanist colleagues, on ethnozoology and flora.

Reptiles of the Solomon Islands
McCoy, M

This book provides comprehensive accounts of 85 reptiles, which represent all the currently known species occurring in this island archipelago. Most importantly, the natural histories of the living animals are given in detail, and almost all species - including many colour variants - are depicted in large, full-colour photographs. While Reptiles of the Solomon Islands is essentially a field guide, it is compiled in such a way as to be of use not only for professional biologists working in the field or museum, but also for the interest of amateur naturalists and travellers in Solomon Islands. In fact anyone with an appreciation for the natural history of this group of beautiful South Pacific islands will find this book a worthwhile addition to their library.
Michael McCoy lived in Solomon Islands for 26 years, working as a photographer and writer. He has published several books, worked as a consultant on a number of television documentaries, and his photographs have appeared widely in regional and international publications. He now lives in Australia.

"During the 26 years Mike McCoy lived in the Solomons, he visited nearly all the islands in the archipelago and is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the reptile fauna of the Solomons. He is also an extraordinarily gifted photographer with a keen eye for detail, an indefatigable field worker and an old and close friend. Since the publication of the first field guide in 1980, he has continued his studies, making many additional discoveries, and this fine book is the culmination of those efforts." Advances in Phycological Studies: Festschrift in Honour of Prof. Dobrina Temniskova-Topalova
Ognjanova-Rumenova, N Manoylov, K (ED)

The Festschrift to honour Prof. Dobrina Temniskova-Topalova's 70th birthday includes articles by some of her current and former students, colleagues, collaborators, and friends over the years. The volume is a collection of 25 research articles on different aspects of phycology and is intended to reflect her versatile academic interests and areas of expertise. The topics covered by the papers include taxonomy, palaeoecology, physiology, and ecology of different algal groups. Some articles describe new taxa from fossil and recent materials of Europe, Asia and North America: a new genus Hyalosigma, fourteen new diatom species, and one new combination. Important patterns of the morphological evolution in extinct diatom genera of family Stephanodiscaceae in Lake Baikal are discussed. New floristic and taxonomic information on the distribution of the endemic Chara corfuensis J. Gr. ex Fil. and the tropical Compsopogon coeruleus (Balbis) Montagne is provided. Research on various biostratigraphical and palaeoecological marine and lacustrine basins, based on diatoms and dinoflagellate cysts, is presented. More specialized topics like uniparental auxosporulation are presented also. Careful analyses of the infection process in the green microalga pathosystem and an unicellular fungal parasite are discussed. A substantial group of articles focuses on the ecology of freshwater diatoms - redefinition of their importance in bioassessment, density and nutrient dependence of diatoms, and the use of new analytical methods like nonparametric multiplicative regression modeling. The book is addressed to specialists and students interested in taxonomy, ecology, physiology, biostratigraphy and palaeoecology of algae.

Les Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) des Petites Antilles
Taxonomie, ethologie, biogeographie
F. Chalumeau & J. Touroult

This monograph on the longhorn beetles of the Lesser West Indies (Anguilla to Grenada) and Virgin Islands is the first regional synthesis covering all known species, including those described by the authors. The first part deals with such generalities like habitats and biogeography, phenology, previous studies and methods. The second part represents a monography of the 135 species involved, all keyed, with type locality, taxonomic remarks, diagnosis, variability, distribution, and biology. Most data on the species' distribution and biology, especially host plants relationships, are original. Most of the species have never been illustrated in colour so far.

Fascinating Insects
Some aspects of insect life
P. Jolivet & K. K. Verma

This book highlights the very successful and much diversified group of organisms, the insects, and deals with some interesting aspects of insect life, which are often ignored in entomology textbooks. There are chapters on ants making "slaves;" insect migrations; chemical defence strategies; parental care and love; AIDS and insects; killer bees; and intelligence. The book also includes first-hand experiences of the great traveller-naturalist Prof. P. Jolivet, who narrates the re-emergence of the 17-year-cycle cicada in the USA in May 2004; the occurrence of insects on the great tepuys of Venezuela; marching of army ants in the tropical Africa; and much more.

Pierre Jolivet, D.Sc., has written many research papers and books on the beetle family Chrysomelidae. His areas of special interest include the biology of Timarcha, food plants of chrysomelids, and ants-plants relationship. He has co-edited four important books on Chrysomelidae: Biology of Chrysomelidae (1988), Novel Aspects of the Biology of Chrysomelidae (1994), Chrysomelidae Biology, in three volumes (1996), and New Developments in the Biology of Chrysomelidae (2004). In recognition of Dr Jolivet's valuable contribution in the subject, the Fifth International Symposium on Chrysomelidae, held in Aug. 2000 in Brazil, was named after him.

K. K. Verma, M.Sc., Ph.D., taught zoology and entomology for over 35 years, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in M. P. Government Colleges, India. He has also specialized in the functional morphology and physiology of Chrysomelidae. He has to his credit a number of outstanding papers published in both Indian and international journals. In 2002, he co-authored a book, Biology of Leaf Beetles, summarizing the current knowledge about leaf beetles.

This appropriately illustrated, eclectic volume of short essays, written with enthusiasm, grace and wit by two knowledgeable, broadly experienced insect scientists, will assist the entomologically uninitiated to appreciate the wonders and complexity of the small creatures whose environment humans inhabit, and will expand the horizons of the initiated with refreshing and useful insights into a wide variety of entomological topics.
George E. Ball, entomologist, professor emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada

This book is written with panache, highlighting the extraordinary adaptations shown by insects. People will eventually awaken to the amazing insect biodiversity that surrounds us. With this book, we are encouraged to follow a fascinating journey of discovery into the world of insects.
Christian Mille, entomologist,
Institut Agronomique neo-Caledonien, La Foa, Nouvelle-Caledonie

This original and unusual book on truly fascinating creatures, not casually dedicated to Jean-Henry Fabre, is not a handbook for identification of insects, or an "official" text of entomology. It is a travel guide -- reflecting the journeys and experiences of the authors throughout the world -- into different aspects of the life of the most diverse extant group of organisms… I would recommend this book both to students and nature lovers who would find in it much to learn about insects, as well as to professionals.
Achille Casale, professor of zoology and entomology,
University of Sassari, Italy

Fascinating as Fabre's Souvenirs Entomologiques, but here, they are real life-experiences under the tropics, incredible but true, related with talent.
Yves Delange, professor of botany,
National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France

Cercopid Spittle Bugs of the New World (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cercopidae)
C. S. Carvalho & M. D. Webb

South America processes a staggering number of insect species. Whilst most people are familiar with its butterflies few realise that there is a group of equally colourful and interesting insects. These are commonly referred to as either Spittle bugs, due to the watery excreta produced by the young or Frog-hoppers, the latter referring to their great ability to jump. In South America they are also known for the serious damage they cause to pasture grasses and sugar-cane. This book provides the first comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guide to this family of jewel-like insects. Nearly every species is included in superb colour together with line drawings to aid identification. Stunning pictures are also given of the insects in the wild. Biomes of Brazil is a didactical presentation of the eight more important biomes of this subcontinent, for the use of the academic and student reader. The bi-lingual text of the book, makes it accessible also to the environmentalist and ecotourism public world-wide. The eight chapters follow the same sequence of treatement, from a short geologic and environmetal introduction, to the presentation of the respective flora and fauna and ending with human aspects and environmental issues. The most recent level of knowledge is being reviewed, leaving space also for new and original considerations.

The first author is emeritus professor of Zoology in Israel. He has lectured for 25 years also in Brazil, on subjects of nature protection and evolution, while first-hand studying also some of the biomes treated in this book. The second author is professor of ecology at the University of Sao-Paulo, where she is a forefront specialist in bees and in sociobiology. She is also involved for many years in environmental education and politics in Brazil. The book is exclusively hand-illustrated, with didactic drawings and schemes and especially with large-scale dioramas of the different biomes. Most of the illustration is from the hand of the third author, a consumate naturalist and ornithologist and a resourceful teacher.

Contributions to Systematics and Biology of Beetles
Papers celebrating the 80th birthday of Igor Konstantinovich Lopatin
A. Konstantinov, A. Tishechkin & L. Penev (Eds.)

This volume is dedicated to Professor Igor Konstantinovich Lopatin in celebration of his 80th birthday. Igor Konstantinovich is a renown taxonomist, prolific author, innovative biological explorer, and respected teacher who trained hundreds of students and during his professional life was (and still is) an inspiration and a mentor for scores of taxonomists. His tireless enthusiastic work shaped generations of Belarusian zoologists, brought a wide and steady respect of systematics into a local scientific community. But most important, he taught us that collecting and studying beetles, small and big, bright and dull, is a noble thing to do.
Contributions assembled in this volume reflect Lopatin's intellectual breadth and diverse scientific interests. Some dwells on Lopatin's interest in biogeography of arid areas of the Palearctic describing zoogeographic connections between desert faunas of Middle Asia, Iran, and Afghanistan, and leaf beetle fauna of the Hermon Mountains in Israel. Other contributions reflect Lopatin's interest in host plant relationships, e.g. discovery of a rare crucifer in Turkey being eaten by an even rarer flea beetle. Many contributions are revisions and keys for identification in nearly all major groups of beetles. Some are checklists, faunistic notes, ecological studies, and many contain descriptions of new taxa in many beetle families. This book will be an indispensable source of information on beetle taxonomy, diversity, biogeography, and host plant relationships. It will be useful for entomologists, ecologists, extension scientists, entomology students, comparative morphologists and evolutionary biologists working across beetle taxa and anybody interested in beetle identification.

Bengaliidae du Monde (Insecta, Diptera) (Bengaliidae of the World (Insecta, Diptera))
Lehrer, A

This monograph reveals spectacular and previously unknown, taxonomic diversity of the new myrmecophilous dipteran family Bengaliidae. The type and sole genus, Bengalia, has hitherto been placed in the family Calliphoridae. Based on a thorough revision and a detailed study of its morphology, Bengaliidae is shown to represent a distinct family phylogenetically distant from Calliphoridae. The new family actually comprises four subfamilies, 12 genera and 70 species, of which three subfamilies, ten genera and 49 species are described as new. All Bengaliidae appear to be associated with ant nests in the Afrotropical and Oriental regions.

The monograph is richly illustrated with b/w line drawings, giving in detail the characters of, and keys to, all the taxa of Bengaliidae. The male genitalia are depicted for each of the new or revised species. The phylogeny of Bengaliidae and its position within Diptera is also discussed.

Dr. Andy Z. Lehrer is one of the globally leading specialists on Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae, the author of numerous papers on the taxonomy and biogeography of dipterans. The book is addressed to specialists in the biology and ecology of flies and ants, to generalist taxonomists, biogeographers and evolutionists, as well as any zoological library collecting literature on the above topics.
